Makeup Steps That Slay

The vibe: easy, clean, and actually lasts

Some days I want a full face, some days I want “I woke up like this (but better)” 😌 Either way, having a makeup routine order makes everything faster, smoother, and way less patchy. I used to do steps randomly and then wonder why my base separated by lunch… yeah, no.

This is my go-to step-by-step flow that works for beginners, everyday makeup, school makeup, and even soft glam. And yes… I’m also the person who will ask: Yay or nay? Is a step missing? Should anything be rearranged? Because makeup is personal, but the order matters if you want it to blend like butter ✨

Step 0 (optional but life-changing): prep like you mean it

If the skin prep is rushed, the makeup will show it. I keep it simple and consistent so my base doesn’t fight me.

1) Toner (optional)
I do this when my skin feels textured or dry. It helps everything after sit nicer. If I’m rushing, I skip.

2) Moisturizer
This is non-negotiable for me. Even if I’m oily, I still moisturize—just lighter. When I skip this, my foundation clings to random spots and my concealer looks crusty under the eyes.

3) Sunscreen (daytime)
If it’s daytime, I always do sunscreen before makeup. I let it settle a few minutes so my primer doesn’t pill. (If you’ve ever had little roll-y bits on your cheeks… you know the pain.)

Step 1: Primer (the “make it last” step)

Primer is where I decide what kind of day I’m having: long day, short day, humid day, or “I’m taking pics” day 📸

How I apply: a thin layer, mostly where makeup breaks up first (T-zone, around nose, chin). I press it in instead of rubbing like lotion—pressing helps it grip.

Quick tip: If your base slides, give primer a minute to set. If your base looks dry, use less primer and more moisturizer underneath.

Step 2: Eyebrows (before or after base—here’s how I choose)

Eyebrows are the step that changes my whole face the fastest. I switch the timing depending on the look.

Option A: Brows before foundation
Perfect for natural makeup days. I do a light brow gel or soft fill first, then base. It keeps brows from looking too “stamped.”

Option B: Brows after powder
If I want crisp brows, I wait until the base is set. This is also easier if I’m doing a fuller face.

My rule: If I’m doing bold brows, I do them later. If I’m doing fluffy brows, I do them earlier.

Step 3: Foundation (or skip it if you’re in a 10-minute routine)

Foundation is optional, not mandatory. Some days I only spot conceal and call it a day. But when I do wear foundation, the goal is always the same: even out, not cover everything.

How I keep it skin-like:

• Start in the center of the face (where redness usually is) and blend outward.
• Use thin layers. You can always add more, but you can’t un-cake it.
• If I’m using a sponge, I dampen it first. Dry sponges eat product and leave patchiness.

Rushing hack: If there’s no time for foundation, I go straight to concealer under eyes + spots, then blush + powder. It still looks put together and feels lighter.

Step 4: Concealer (brighten + spot cover)

This step is where I decide if I’m doing “fresh and awake” or “full glam beat.”

Under eyes: I place concealer at the inner corner and slightly outward (not a huge triangle every time). Then I blend upward so it lifts the face instead of dragging it down.

Spots: I tap concealer only where I need it, then blend the edges. If I swipe it around, it just removes the coverage I wanted.

Optional: color corrector
If you have darkness or discoloration that always shows through, a corrector under concealer can help. I keep it super thin—too much corrector can make everything look heavy.

Step 5: Cream contour / bronzer (optional, but so pretty)

When I want dimension, I do this right after concealer while the base is still a little “alive.” Cream products melt into the skin best before powder.

Where I place it:

• Cheekbones (slightly above the hollow, not too low)
• Temples / hairline (for warmth)
• Jawline (lightly, to balance the face)
• Nose (only if I’m feeling patient 😅)

Blend tip: Blend upward. Always upward. If you blend down, it can look muddy.

Step 6: Blush (cream, liquid, or powder—pick your fighter)

Blush is my favorite step because it instantly makes the face look healthy and alive. I rotate between cream blush, liquid blush, and powder blush depending on how long I need it to last.

For speed: Cream or powder is usually quickest. Liquid can be fast too, but you have to blend immediately or it sets where you placed it.

Placement I love: On the cheeks and slightly up toward the temples for a lifted look. If I want a cute “soft” vibe, I keep it more centered.

Pro tip: If you’re doing both cream and powder blush, do cream first, then set with a tiny bit of powder blush for longevity.

Step 7: Bronzer (if you didn’t do cream bronzer earlier)

If I skipped cream bronzer, I add warmth here with powder bronzer. This is also where I fix the “my foundation made me look flat” problem.

Where it goes: perimeter of the face—forehead, temples, cheeks. I keep it light because it’s easier to add than to erase.

Step 8: Setting powder (blur + oil control)

Powder is the step that decides whether I’m glowing or greasy by mid-day. If you’re oily, powder is your best friend. If you’re dry, powder is still useful—just use less and place it strategically.

How I apply:

• Under eyes: press lightly, don’t bake unless you love that look.
• Around nose + chin: press and roll (these areas crease and separate first).
• Forehead: only if I get shiny.

Touch-up tip: Pressing powder is quicker than loose powder when you’re out. I like to keep something small for touch-ups because real life happens.

Step 9: Highlighter + inner corner pop

This step is optional, but when I do it… it’s giving ✨ I keep it controlled so it looks like glow, not glitter overload.

Where I place it:

• Tops of cheekbones
• Tip of nose (tiny amount)
• Cupid’s bow (if I’m doing lip liner + gloss)
• Inner corners of the eyes (this makes you look more awake instantly)

Note: If you have texture, a softer luminous highlight usually looks smoother than chunky shimmer.

Step 10: Eyeshadow (simple is still a look)

I don’t always do eyeshadow, but when I do, I keep it beginner-friendly: one shade in the crease, one shimmer (or luminous shade) on the lid, and done.

Easy combo: matte neutral in crease + luminous on lid + inner corner highlight. It looks polished without taking forever.

Step 11: Eyeliner (optional)

Eyeliner is one of those steps that can either take 10 seconds or 10 minutes 😭 On quick days, I do a soft line close to the lashes or just tightline. On glam days, I’ll do a wing.

Shortcut: Smudge a little liner at the lash line and blend it slightly—soft, forgiving, and still defines the eyes.

Step 12: Mascara + lashes (top and bottom)

Mascara pulls everything together. I usually curl first, then do mascara. If I’m rushing, I do two quick coats and focus on the outer lashes for lift.

Top lashes: wiggle at the root, then pull up.
Bottom lashes: light touch only—too much can transfer and ruin the under-eye area.

If I’m wearing lashes: I do mascara first, then lashes, then a tiny bit more mascara to blend if needed.

Step 13: Lip liner + lip gloss (or balm first)

Lips are my “final boss” step because they change the whole vibe. Even if I do minimal face makeup, lip liner + gloss makes it look intentional.

My order:

• Lip balm first (especially if lips are dry)
• Lip liner to shape and define (I slightly overline only where I naturally lose definition)
• Lip gloss on top for that juicy finish

Car routine confession: Lips are the easiest step to do on the go. I’ve done lip liner in a mirror that’s definitely not meant for makeup… and survived.

Step 14: Setting spray (the “melt it together” step)

If I’m doing a full face or I need it to last, setting spray is the closer. It takes away the powdery look and makes everything blend into one skin-like finish.

How I use it: I spray, let it sit for a few seconds, then lightly press with a sponge if I want extra smoothness.

My favorite routine orders (pick what matches your day)

Full face order: moisturizer → primer → brows (optional) → foundation → concealer → cream contour/bronzer → cream/liquid blush → powder → bronzer (if needed) → highlight → eyeshadow → eyeliner → mascara/lashes → lip liner + gloss → setting spray

10-minute everyday/school order: moisturizer → primer → concealer → blush → powder → mascara → lips

Beginner-friendly order (no stress): moisturizer → primer → foundation (optional) → concealer → powder → brows → mascara → lips
